Book Review: When Opposites Meet by Sachin Garg

I received a free copy of this book from Book Fever in exchange for an honest review. To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this book, given the cheesy title. But I have to say, I was quite surprised by the story. And that brings us back to the old adage: Never judge a book by its cover.

Here’s the blurb:

What happens when opposites meet? When two completely different people find themselves drawn to each other? Can they really find happiness together? Can wheelchair-bound Ritwika find a chord that connects her to national-level athlete Chetan? Will Aditi’s irrepressible cheerfulness restart Jayant’s life, put on indefinite pause since his parents’ death? Does Indu, happily divorced, rediscover her faith in love with the reclusive Lokesh? When Opposites Meet is the story of three unlikely couples and the differences between them. It’s the story of love, and the possibility of finding it in the most unlikely of places.

When Opposites Meet is an easy, breezy read that has you hooked from the beginning. It is a short book, but one that has enough research behind it to make it seem plausible. It shows a different world than one that we are used to living in. Every single person in there is as human as us, but their setting somehow seems optimistic from the get-go. This is one of the biggest reasons why I enjoyed reading this book.

The world is a cruel one, and sometimes, it is hard to understand why. But When Opposites Meet, there is a possibility that they will be able to stand up to the world in ways that cannot be fathomed by any other combination of humans. It is from this positivity that hope buds. Yes, opposites attract is not always true. But when they do, it’s pretty much fireworks all around.

I love how the author, Sachin Garg, has put in the effort to do the research for the health conditions shown in the book. If you pay proper attention to the book cover, you will see that it foreshadows enough of the story. That is, if the title hasn’t told you enough. And that is another point of wonder for me.

When Opposites Meet takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions, be it love, sorrow, helplessness, or joy. But never does it make you angry. This, perhaps, because of the unhindered optimism that it reflected to me, which I cannot really explain. There are books that you think are happy but destroy you. Then there are books that live up to their first impressions. When Opposites Meet is one of the second type.

The author has done a beautiful job, connecting the dots, right from the first page to the last. In addition to telling us that love cannot be forced, he tells us that one can never control when and where love happens and who it happens with. It just happens. Even the parties involved can be quite oblivious to it and shocked when it happens.

Despite all the loveliness it exudes, I felt that it could have been a little bit longer. And despite its optimism, I felt that in places it was more fantasy than reality. But then, if there was to be mere boring reality in the book, it wouldn’t have been as beautiful as it is now.

All in all, Sachin Garg’s When Opposites Meet is a wonderful, light, feel-good set of love stories with deep backgrounds. And despite these deep backgrounds, it almost feels light and bright and easygoing. A genre that I’ve always held love for.
