A big thank you to the author, Ankita Singh, for a copy of the book. Two Girls in Love released on April 20, 2019.
I was supposed to have reviewed this book a long time ago, but no thanks to circumstances, I’m late in reviewing this wonderful, short book of poetic story-in-verses (as described by the author) from author Ankita Singh.
Everyone knows that if you are homosexual, anywhere you go in this world, you are looked at as if you’ve committed one of the most heinous crimes in the history of crimes. I simply cannot understand how people who want others to understand their point of view and opinions without pushing their own on to them, can do the same to other people when they don’t conform to their idea of “being right”. But yet, that is the harsh reality of life and we either have to try and show them what’s right or make peace with the fact that there will always be people who will try to pull you back from who you are.
Two Girls in Love is a short story-in-verses, but in those few pages, you can feel the pain, the heartbreak, the hope, the strength, and everything that a lesbian girl has to go through. While the world is hell bent upon judging a person based on their sexual affinity, Two Girls in Love is a work that breaks your heart and makes you smile in the same breath. I really didn’t think that was possible, but it did happen and here I am, talking to you about it.
Every page is a poetic diary entry, and every one of them is filled with an inexplicably positive emotion. Right from the point where the Supreme Court of India ruled that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was unconstitutional – a matter of heavy celebration across the country, to the point where the girl writing the diary comes to term with the fact that she wants to share her truth with her family and eventually find love. But just because Section 377 is decriminalized doesn’t mean that every person in the country will accept it right away.
There’s no fault I find with this book, which is why I think it’s an amazing, 5-star read for me – one of my very few this year. Though I finished it before I realized it and didn’t know what to do of my bruised heart. I would have loved it if the book had been even 10-20 pages longer. This is my only complaint. 😀
Highly recommend Two Girls in Love. This is the kind of writing we need more and more of in this time and age!
