2021 Goals: Reading / Writing / Booktube / Bookstagram / Life Goals

Look who’s here with a super late blog post about goal setting for 2021! It meeee!

See, technically, this blog post should have gone up in the first week of January. But I was so busy with posting videos to BookTube (I posted a goals video as well) that I didn’t pay heed to what was supposed to go up on the blog. But hey! We’re still in January! There’s hope yet. Right? Please tell me there is or I might break down. 🙂

Anyway, I wanted to share with you the few (many) goals that I have for 2021. These encompass my reading goals, writing goals, Booktube goals, Bookstagram goals, life goals, and a lot many more. Let me know in the comments what goals you have for 2021 and if there’s any goal on here that resonates with you and that you’d like to take up for yourself.

As mentioned before, I already have a 2021 goals video up on my BookTube channel. If you’d like to go check that out, here’s the link: 2021 Goals.

Reading Goals

  • The Goodreads Challenge: I usually put my Goodreads challenge to something I think I can achieve so that I don’t pressure myself. Last year, my goal was 104 books (2 per week), but this week I’ve toned it down very slightly to 100. I’m sure I will cross this but I’ll be happy even if I don’t. This year is going to be way different, if you can’t tell already. XD
  • Actually finish the books on the 21 Books I Want to Read in 2021 list. I don’t every year, so you can understand why I’ve put it on the goals list. I want that high of ‘achievement unlocked’. 😛
  • Actually finish the series that I said I wanted to finish in a recent video. Hah. Another one of these. Here’s the video link if you’d like to go check it out: Series I Want to Read in 2021.
  • The funniest and the most outlandish goal of all: Bring down TBR to at least 400. Big LOL this is because last year, I said that I want to get it down to 300. But instead it has shot up to close to 500. So who knows what’s going to happen? But since I’m determined to make 2021 as different as possible, there’s a tiny bit of hope shining through. Or my books might kill me. 😛
  • Finish reading my existing review copies in the first 6 months. Publishers have been sending me books for a few months now and I haven’t been able to read all of them. So this year, I’m hoping to get to them and actually put up reviews before the publishers decide to ditch me. Well, that’s not the only motivation, but you get my point. 🙂
  • Write reviews of all the books I read and upload them to Amazon and Goodreads. (Failing spectacularly right now, but hopefully will pick up soon and will become regular by the end of the year.)
  • Watch book to movie adaptations of my favorite books. Example: The Book Thief, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Man Called Ove, One Day, The Little Prince, The Hate U Give.)
  • Read up on Indian history. This is going to be a process that I start and not necessarily finish this year since history is deep enough that time can’t keep up with it.

BookTube Goals

Okay, a necessary self-plug before I get on with this: I have a YouTube channel called The Melodramatic Bookworm where I talk about books and occasionally movies and travel as well. I call myself a BookTuber because I primarily talk about books. And for this coming year, I have a few goals that I want to achieve, and these are not just numbers. Here are the goals that I’ve set myself:

  • I want to cross 4000 subscribers before 2021 ends. I’d originally thought that 2000 subs by the time my third BookTube anniversary rolls around (February 18) would be ambitious. But that happened in November 2020 (25th November was the date *blushing*) and now, I’m cautiously optimistic that my channel can move forward and achieve this goal. 🙂
  • Posting consistently – I began to post with military consistency from September 2020 and I’ve seen that it helps channel growth a lot. And more than that, it helps me have a schedule and something in mind to work towards. So Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays have stuck and I hope that they’ll stick for the rest of the year (and after that) too!
  • I know how important breaks are for my own sanity. I took 4 days off of social media in October last year and came back fresh and bursting with ideas. So I’m going to make sure that I take at least a month away from BookTube, scattered across the year, so that I don’t burn myself out. It’s going to be super helpful!
  • Do a few collaborations – perhaps one a month. Not sure if this will come through, but hopefully, if I put this out there, something will make it happen? 😀

Bookstagram Goals

July 2021 will see 3 years of my being on Bookstagram and posting about books there according to my whims and fancies. And there’s a lot I’d like to change about that!

But before that, if you’d like to follow me on Bookstagram, here’s the link: The Melodramatic Bookworm.

Here are the Bookstagram goals I set myself:

  • Be more consistent in posting – consistency is a super important part of Bookstagram growth as well.
  • Posting book reviews of every book I read – failing miserably at this so far. But I hope I can pick up soon.
  • Different types of bookish pictures like book stacks, book recommendations, flatlays, books as outfits, etc.
  • Engage with the community. Oh, I’ve been such a bad bookstagrammer friend these past few months, I can’t even tell you! But I hope that all that’s about to change because this girl is about to put on her game face and shower some much-pending love!
  • Venture into Instagram Reels. And this I’ve ticked off (although I need to be consistent – that word again lol) and made my Reels debut recently. Click here to watch. 🙂
  • Learn photo editing. Looking at some of the stunning pictures that Bookstagrammers post is giving me major FOMO and has me wishing that I could do that magic too. Hence a wish, a goal, an ambition to learn photo editing.
  • Take Canon photography tutorials. I have a Canon 200D and all I use that for is to film BookTube videos when I could be employing it for so much more! So I’m determined to learn photography so that I can produce some content that I’m proud of as well. 🙂
  • Learn better Photoshop. I don’t have to tell you why I want to do this. 😉

Writing Goals

Yep, I’m a writer too and have 3 books out in the market:

  • Of Knights and Lilies (2015): A little love story that’s available in paperback and ecopies across the world on all platforms that I know of.
  • Five of Hearts (2017): My first short story collection that’s available exclusively on Kindle.
  • Nonet (2020): My second short story collection that’s also available exclusively only on Kindle.

There’s a lot of things that I want to write and every single time, my writing has been pushed onto the backburner. But I want to make some changes in 2021 and make sure I don’t ignore writing, something that I love doing. Here are my writing goals for 2021:

  • Finish writing at least the first draft of my second novel that has been in the works for 5 years now. Yikes.
  • Publish a poetry collection. I’m not really sure on the details because I want to make sure that I polish the collection up before I put it out.
  • Work on a travelogue. I visited the USA in 2015 and documented my experience in a diary. It’s not a lot but since it was the first time I ever traveled solo (I was alone in 2 US cities), I want to write it and put it out there for the world to read. Not sure how it will be received, but hey!
  • Finish writing all my pending short stories. The thing about short stories is that the ideas come in paragraphs and sentences, but I’m not able to flesh them out into complete stories. Hopefully 2021 will be the year in which I complete all of them, including the editing!
  • No pressure about querying any of my work with agents. Last year, I had said that I wanted to finish writing, editing, and polishing my second novel and start sending it out to agents. But I was overestimating my abilities and underestimating the amount of work pressure I’d be under. Not this time! I’m going to take it easy and write because I want to write. Not because I have to send it out somewhere or for someone to read and validate it. Let’s put that off for next year. 😛

Other Goals

These are goals that do not fit into any of the above sections but are equally important to me. Be it the life goals on here or anything else you’ve read so far, each of them plays a part in making my life better. So…

  • Learning Spanish. I started this a few years ago and haven’t been able to make much progress. But this year, I intend to use Duolingo and complete at least 50% on the app. I can then use other ways to pick up the language. Right? 😀
  • Become healthy, and not just meaning exercise. I want to make lasting changes to my habits as well. This is going to be super-tough so I’m going to take it easy and make gradual changes so that they’ll stick. Not sure how far I’ll go but even a few meters will make a difference this way.
  • Become more organized – oh boy, this is something I struggle with and the lack of organization is probably the thing that’s giving me so much pressure. So I want to organize my work more. Try to schedule my work at the beginning of each month so that I can rest easy and not lose any more hair. 😛
  • Revamp this blog and become more active here. I LOVE writing more than I love BookTubing, I’ll be very honest. But I haven’t been able to pay attention here ever since I started enjoying BookTube. Because why type and get carpal tunnel when you can have verbal diarrhea on camera was my thinking most times. 😛 Kidding. I seriously feel that my lack of organization (check previous point) contributed to my blogging delinquency. That’s about to change, my loves. A lot is about to change. 🙂

So those were my goals for 2021. What are yours? Would you like to follow me on BookTube and Bookstagram? What do you think of my content? What kind of content do you like to see? How often would you like to see a blog post from me? Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear from you. 🙂 I’ll see you soon in a new blog post. Until next time, keep reading and don’t forget to add some loving melodrama to your life! 🙂
