The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley was one of my most anticipated books of 2024 and I got to read it recently. But was it worth all that anticipation? Because Lucy Foley’s books have been a bit of a hit or miss for me and they have always alternated.

Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo | Book Review
Before I explain to you how disappointing one of my most anticipated books of 2023 was, I need to put it out there that Elizabeth Acevedo is one of my favorite authors of all time. When she announced Family Lore, her first novel for adult readers, I lost my mind with excitement and anticipation. And when August 2023 came, I was sick with worry because no bookstore here was stocking it. You know why? Because the Australian book market is weird like that. Half the global book releases are postponed Down Under and the same was the case with Family Lore.
Favorite and Least Favorite Books of 2023 | 2023 Reading Wrap Up Series
The end of a year and the start of a new year is always scramble time for me, because I’ve got to do my end-of-year wrap ups and start-of-year plans. I started off 2024 with full energy, posting my 2024 goals, a book review (Roman Stories by Jhumpa Lahiri), and one in my 2023 reading wrap up series (Books I DNFed in 2023). But after that, things got weirdly lethargic health-wise and I somehow lost steam for a bit, trying to post on all platforms but only succeeding on one or two at any given time. That was the impetus that pushed me and I forced myself to revisit my goals for the year. It reminded me of what I want for my brand in 2024 and how I want to succeed.
And that success isn’t going to come about if I flail around like a headless chicken. So here I am, trying to get my to-do list set according to priority and trying to check them off one by one.
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone | Book Review / Thoughts
If you’ve been on Book Twitter over the past few weeks, you’ll know that an account called Bigolas Dickolas Wolfwood tweeted about a book called This is How You Lose the Time War. The tweet blew up, so much that there are now cosplays involving people holding up huge mockups of the book. This became, for me, a case of wanting to jump on the bandwagon, especially since I’d seen this book on a few lists by this point and made a mental note to get to it someday. The tweet came as a final push.
Dear Girls by Ali Wong | Book Review
A few weeks ago, I borrowed Dear Girls from my local library, thinking about how Ali Wong was a badass woman, an inspiration, and wanting to see what she had to say. Dear Girls, her memoir, is a letter to her daughters in which she recollects things she’s done in her life. She warns them not to read the book before they turn 21 and I agree one hundred percent because boy, oh, boy, there’s some stuff that’s not share-worthy at all. Especially not to one’s daughters. But going into the book, I had some really high expectations – from the book, from actor Ali Wong, and from comedian Ali Wong, and from writer Ali Wong.

I don’t want to start off yet another blog post with how shitty 2022 started off, although by mentioning this, I’ve actually done what I said I wouldn’t. But it’s a big reason why my reading saw so many crests and troughs throughout the year, so it’s unavoidable, really. I’ve already spoke about how blogging went for me in 2022 (here in this blog post). Today, I’ll talk about how my reading went. I’ve been writing this blog post for what feels like decades and only now am I getting to upload it. But better late than never, right?
