Let Us Save Courtesy From The Brink of Extinction! – Collaboration

Veering away from the book reviews and movie reviews that I’ve been doing, here’s a blog post that I wrote in collaboration with Meher Gandhi of The Scribblings. We’ve written two such articles: one of them is this, and the other:

Meher and I agreed that courtesy is something that is lacking in this time and age. And because our ideas matched, we could bring these words to agree with each other as well!

There are two meanings to humanity. One, the collective word for human beings. And two, the quality of being compassionate and treating everyone equally. In a time when free speech is both encouraged and frowned upon, it would be safe to say that humanity has lost touch with humanity. We have one Earth, one life to live. Why make it difficult? Why can we not live in tandem with those around us? Why the foul-mouthing, why the bitterness, why the hatred? Why can we not be courteous to those around us? The most important question of all is: Why is courtesy a trait that is diminishing at such an alarming speed?

Why not just be kind and spread love? Bashing others for no reason and expressing bitterness instead of actually appreciating is not a cool thing to do. This world is lacking compassion and magnanimity and we, the people who do fun things for the sake of enjoying the only life that we have, need to understand this fact. How about focusing on our rise instead of focusing on other’s fall? Love and respect are things we all deserve irrespective of age, gender or any other basis on which discrimination takes place. Who feels nice to be criticized and talked bad about for almost no reason?! Kindness doesn’t cost anything. Imagine what the world would be like if all the 7.6 billion people pledge to be genial and indulgent towards each other! Villains are not always required to give rise to heroes. We all can be heroes, in eyes and by hearts.

The most important step we need to take in order to become these heroes is to open our eyes. To the fact that the universe doesn’t revolve around us. To the fact that we don’t lose anything by being courteous to fellow human beings. To the fact that saying nothing is better than talking bad about people around us. And to the most important fact of all: no human is beneath us. If we even consider being rude to people around us, we need to ask ourselves just one question: How would we feel if the same was done to us? If the answer is silence or something not very good, we’ll know what it means. There is a lot of introspection that needs to go into the way we interact with people, and the way we treat them. In the end, it’s just how we react to our inner voice.

So, let’s all scud out of this deep pit of greed, envy, and cruelty. Let’s fly into the open sky of goodness and greatness. Let’s be of help to the needy. Let’s understand that before belonging to any creed or caste, we all are homo sapiens. We all have hearts that need to be full of love for the ones around us and the ones far off. We all are a part of a humongous family so, let’s all act like one. Geographical boundaries may have separated us but, there are no boundaries for spreading love and kindness, now that we have a network that connects us all and works on our finger tips. Let’s all not just blurt out words for the sake of giving speeches but, let’s act and do justice to the phrases. Let’s stop being heartless. Let’s just be kind and courteous and good. Deep down, that’s all what everybody wants.
