Cosmos to Consciousness by Sekar Manickam Retd IPS | Book Review

One thing that leaves everyone in awe is the utter vastness and versatility of the universe. Questions of where everything came from aren’t unanswered, but those of how it works are – at least some of them. Different cultures and religions across the world have their own explanations about why certain things like eclipses happen and how life came into being. In this new book called Cosmos to Consciousness by Sekar Manickam retd. IPS, he aims to explore many of these cosmic level topics, including quantum physics and mechanics, with a generous mix of opinion and fact.

From talking about life as a whole and speculating about the meaning it has, to putting it in the larger perspective of the universe, to black holes and dark energy, to examining the human brain, Cosmos to Consciousness covers almost all the topics that we’ve probably forever been curious about. While I wouldn’t say that all the questions that plague our brain find answers in here, because that would be impossible, there are answers intriguing enough that you’re willing to put those other questions on the backburner so that you can quench your newfound curiosity with these.

But despite this, and despite the intention behind the book being in the right place, there are multiple problems with it, which lead to a reader not being able to fully grasp what the author is trying to say. Here are a few:

  • The language is raw and rough. Along with the way the topics are being explained, it feels childish, even though the topics themselves are nowhere near childish.
  • Semantics aside, the most obvious errors are the numerous spelling mistakes – even in names – and words obviously missing in some sentences.
  • Some other hypotheses and assumptions seem completely in contrast with what science has proven to be most likely to have happened. But since they are opinions, reading and moving on is recommended.
  • Topics bleed into each other, some related, some leaving you wondering about the connection between them. Given, everything in the universe is connected on some level, but flow is important, too.

The paradox of this book is that you’ll have to be familiar with basic science terms and facts and yet, you can contextually understand what the author is saying. It’s a strange way of going about reading about the birth of the universe, protons, neutrons, and electrons, but hey! If it works, it works.

Either way, Cosmos to Consciousness is a book that you’d want to pick up, because despite all the glaring issues, it holds information that will shape your own opinions and information.
