Tonya Harding is a former American figure skater who, no thanks to a number of circumstances, was banned from figure skating for life. I, Tonya is Harding’s story, which if it is true, means that a great injustice was done to her.
The Big Sick | Movie Review
To be frank, I hadn’t heard of Kumail Nanjiani before watching The Big Sick. And it wasn’t even my idea to watch this movie. The only people I knew in this film were Zoe Kazan (thanks to What If) and Ray Romano. My husband told me that Nanjiani was one of the funniest guys in America and that we absolutely had to watch the movie. So I said yes, we should watch it and lo and behold! We did!
The Post | Movie Review
To be honest, when this movie got an Oscar nod, I stared at the poster for a long time trying to figure it out. I had no idea what I was in for when I decided to watch and review Oscar-nominated films from the 8 biggest categories. Whatever notion I had in mind about this movie, it definitely wasn’t this!
Lady Bird | Movie Review
What do I say about this movie except ask the makers why they would do this to us? There are many who say that there is not much of a story in the film; that it could have been better. They say it just tells us everyday events of a Sacramento girl.
House of Rougeaux by Jenny Jaeckel | Book Review
I got an early copy of House of Rougeaux from NetGalley in exchange for feedback. My impression of books from sites that give away books for review is that the books there are not always ‘wow’. The covers are enticing, the blurbs even more so. But then the stories mostly turn out to be narratives where the authors simply don’t know what they are doing. (I was new to the Netgalley scene at this point and the whole intro seems so tone-deaf, to be honest. XD But I'll keep it for self-introspection sake. :P)
The Sworn Sword by George R. R. Martin | Book Review
The Hedge Knight was the first in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series. Being my first graphic novel and because of my interest in Game of Thrones, the novel had some serious expectations to meet. Meet it did, and how! If this is how graphic novels are (I know not all are the same), then I’m all in! The Hedge Knight was responsible for setting the bar pretty high – something that the sequel, The Sworn Sword would have to live up to.
Wonder | Movie Review
Okay, so Wonder by R. J. Palacio has been on my TBR list for a long time. I had heard so much about it that I knew I had to get my hands on it soon. But unfortunately, the movie Gods made sure the movie was announced before I could read the book. And before I could lay hands on the book, I had to go watch the movie. Thanks to my husband. 😉
The Greatest Showman | Movie Review
Phineas Taylor Barnum. This was the man who gave birth to show business. He pulled the different out of the crowd and gave them wings. He promoted equality, to treat everyone equally, and in this way, to be the philanthropist that the world would take note of. At least that’s what the movie tells us.
The Hedge Knight by George R. R. Martin | Book Review
There are two reasons why I decided to buy and read The Hedge Knight. 1) I follow Game of Thrones, the TV show, religiously. [I haven’t read the books. Don’t bash me. I intend to.] 2) I’ve been wanting to start reading graphic novels for a while now. / And since The Hedge Knight seemed like a convergence of these two, it seemed like a safe bet to start 2018 on!
Let Us Save Courtesy From The Brink of Extinction! – Collaboration
Veering away from the book reviews and movie reviews that I've been doing, here's a blog post that I wrote in collaboration with Meher Gandhi of The Scribblings. We've written two such articles: one of them is this, and the other, Meher will post on her site. It's been an absolute pleasure collaborating with her on these posts. Our thinking is alike and our ideas weave in and out of each other in a harmony that makes me smile. Hope it makes you, the reader, smile too!
